A vendor’s approach to virtualisation makes a big difference to its chances of success in future markets and so we’ve chosen it as one of our key themes. There are many technologies involved in virtualisation – from server to storage system, desktop, systems management, infrastructure software and the way services are delivered to users.  We assess capabilities and performance in four areas. In particular:

  • Technology – investment in virtualising enterprise IT hardware – specifically servers, storage, desktops, networks and smart phones
  • Infrastructure – development of architectural approaches, including management and automation software and allowing the pooling of resources
  • Networking – support for IP architectures, including FCoE and fabric computing and APIs to connect to other similar developments
  • A4 – the ability to deliver ‘any application from any server on any device at any time’; separating application access and services from processing and storage
